Mr. Z and I were in the car today going to our favorite foodie destination Jungle Jims, when I mentioned that I was going to get one of the Cinco de Mayo Roses that I spoke of in the last post. We talked a bit about roses, the differences between Heirlooms and Hybrids etc, when he mentioned this little blip of an article in the latest issue of Popular Science Magazine. I have it here. It is about a paragraph long, and called “Roses on Steroids” It seems that scientists at Hebrew University in Israel have identified and boosted a gene that produces petunias’ scent. They are working on the same thing for roses., According to the story, over time rose breeders have often sacrificed scent over disease resistance, but now that is changing. Once the fragrant roses are made, they plan to insert the gene into yeast for what they call cheaper biological based perfumes.
It all sounds good in theory, and will probably be great in practice, if when it happens, roses and their elements (genes) are still being used in perfumery. I wonder how they feel about Jasmine genes.
Something to think about…..
